Should I Join Lifetime Fitness in Garden City?
I decided to join. It cost me $169 per month for a month to month membership. When I found out that it was only an additional $80 to add my husband, I talked him into joining too. So, now it costs me $240 a month for our gym membership to Lifetime Fitness in Garden City. After being at the club for nearly three months, I think I can give a fair assessment whether or not someone should consider joining.
What I don’t like:
Once you join, no matter what you pay, they onboard you. This really means that they try to up-sell you on everything. I did a personal training session. The trainer was great and gave me a kick-ass strength training workout but encouraged me to join Bootcamp. “You can check it out before you commit,” he said. So, I did.
I went and it was not for me. There was a significant amount of cardio incorporated into strength training. I didn’t need that. I already have enough cardio between my swim, bike and run. I was looking for strength.
The trainer also suggested that I see a nutritionist. I thought that could be a good idea. He said the first session was free. He then booked me an appointment. I knew the guy from a prior club. He was actually my trainer there and since I made a change at that time, I was psyched to see him again.
I don’t know if it was because I know so much more about nutrition now than I did back then, but I was not impressed. The guy suggested a variety of supplements sold at Lifetime Fitness. I bought them all. (But then, after trying them, I returned most of them.)
I also hired him for a personal training session, although I knew what I needed to do. I figured maybe he would show me something different.
When I tried to get out of my final nutrition consult, he told me I couldn’t do that. I bought 2 nutrition consults and one training for $280. “I can give you another consult, but I can’t give you your money back,” he told me. I didn’t want to fight with him, so I went for my 2nd session. He promised I would get another too but that never happened.
I was upset and he knew it, but never made the effort to make it right. I was locked into something that I didn’t want and there was no way to get out of it.
I was also upset by the sales guy too. He was relentless when he tried to lure me in. He called me every day with different offers. I didn’t concede until he told me there would be no initiation fee.
I joined and then it was as if he didn’t know me. I didn’t really care because I wasn’t looking for a friend, but it would have been nice to have someone to talk with if you were unhappy. And talking about that, the manager, whose face is prominently displayed in the gym, was no where to be found. It would have been nice for him to welcome me as a new member. Nothing! Whenever I asked to meet him, he was unavailable. Amazing!
Then, let’s talk about the pool, although nice, I had signed up for a master class. It was an additional $50 a month, but I figured it would be good for me while I was there. I signed up and was told to come on Monday at 6 am. At 4:30 am, I woke up and got ready to go swimming. When I got there, I waited. No one showed up. I never even got an “I’m sorry” from anyone, except the lifeguard on duty at that time.
Even getting 40% off a massage was nice, but as I was leaving to check out, the manager of the salon, said, “oh you should get this moisturizer and this facial wash, it’s amazing and smells awesome.” I smelled it. It did smell good but when I brought it home, it was ridiculously heavy and thick. So much for 40% off.
Lastly, they charge you for everything! The other day, there was a company selling their clothing. I asked if members get a discount and they said, “prices are as marked.” I walked away.
What’s good about Lifetime Fitness:
The pool is nice, real nice. I also like that there is a hot tub in the women’s locker room along with a steam room and sauna. However, the Nassau Aquatic center is bigger, has more lanes and also has a nice hot tub. So is it worth the $200 difference a month?
When you buy a product at the Life Cafe, they seem to take it back, even if it’s opened.
They have state of the art equipment in the exercise studios.
Hmmm, I can’t think of anything else… Is it worth the price? You tell me.
