Beginner Triathlon Training: On Being Obsessed

I started training for the Captiva Tri this past June. At first, I wasn’t sure about the sport. I never swam nor biked much. I knew one thing – I loved to run.

Once I hired a coach, I was still unsure. Is this something I like?

It was a lot of money to get started. I had to buy a road bike, helmet, cycling clothes, a bike rack, wetsuit, a tri kit and more. Before I knew it, I was spending a ton of money on a sport I didn’t even know if I would enjoy.

Now, 10 weeks later, I’m obsessed!

I realized I was obsessed when all I talk about is swimming, cycling and running. (I think I’m driving my family crazy.)

I’m reading articles on gear and looking for local events in my area. And, whenever someone talks about triathlons or Ironman, all I want to do is find out more!

I loved running but I was never this obsessed. I’m actually finding the swimming similar to running. You get into a rhythm and you don’t want to stop. You feel like you can keep going forever.

And then there’s the cycling. When you’re on a bike, there’s a sense of freedom that you don’t get with anything other sport.

I’m still very much a beginner in all three of these sports, even running. I feel like I have a long way to go and yet, in a couple of short weeks, I’ll be in my first triathlon.

Even though I’m obsessed, I wonder if I could put the whole thing together and really go out there and pull this one off… I guess we’ll see in a couple of short weeks…
