On Becoming a Certified Swim Coach

Hilary Topper after she finished her open water swim in mid-October

This past weekend, I embarked on a journey to Boston. My goal was to become a certified Level 2 swim coach through the United States Masters Swimming (USMS) program.

Little did I know that this trip would not only enhance my coaching skills but also provide me with opportunities to reconnect with old friends and expand my knowledge in the world of swimming.

Level 2 Coaching

The Level 2 certification program is designed to teach coaches how to break down the intricacies of different swimming strokes. It’s a crucial step in honing coaching abilities and helping swimmers improve their technique. With excitement and determination, I arrived at the Natick site ready to immerse myself in a weekend of intensive training.

Level 3 Coaching

As the course progressed, I quickly realized that expanding my knowledge beyond Level 2 would be beneficial. So, I decided to enroll in the Level 3 course, which focused on the business aspect of running a swimming group.

This full-day session on Saturday provided invaluable insights into managing and organizing swim programs effectively. It was an eye-opening experience that broadened my understanding of the sport beyond stroke mechanics.

Meeting with a friend

After a productive day of learning, I had the pleasure of meeting up with a friend whom I hadn’t seen in years. We decided to catch up over dinner, reminiscing about our past adventures.

Interestingly, my friend happened to be one of the original Google Glass explorers, just like myself. We swapped stories, shared our experiences, and marveled at how technology has evolved over the years. Notably, we also talked about triathlons, adding yet another common thread to our friendship.

Shamrock Swim Center Day 2

The following day brought even more excitement as we made our way to the Shamrock Swim Center, located just a short drive from the Natick site. This was the venue for the Adult Learn to Swim (ALTS) program, where I would gain certification in teaching beginners and newbies how to swim. The first half of the day was dedicated to instruction and breaking down the strokes, while the second half provided hands-on pool instruction.

The ALTS program not only equipped me with the necessary skills to teach swimming but also emphasized the importance of overcoming fears in the water. We discussed various strategies for instilling confidence in beginners and creating a supportive environment for their learning journey. By the end of the day, I felt empowered as a certified ALTS instructor, ready to guide aspiring swimmers towards their goals in a safe and nurturing manner.

Reflecting back

Reflecting on my weekend in Boston, it was a whirlwind of learning, reconnecting, and personal growth. From upgrading my coaching skills at the Level 2 and Level 3 courses to sharing cherished moments with an old friend, the experience was truly enriching. Equipped with these certifications, I am now confident in my ability to make a positive impact as a swim coach and ALTS instructor.

Making Memories

As a few weeks have passed, I carry with me the memories of this transformative weekend in Boston. The friendships rekindled, the knowledge gained, and the passion for swimming reignited. It’s a reminder that every journey holds opportunities for growth and connection, and I am grateful for the experiences that have shaped me into the coach I am today.
