The Magic of Running: Finding My Way Back After Surgery

Hilary on a road bike

There’s something special about running that I totally missed when I wasn’t running. It seems like the more I run, the better I feel. When I was recovering from surgery (I still am), I didn’t run. When I started back, it was really tough to get my footing. But this week, I’ve run 4 days and am starting to feel like I’m coming back.

The Reality of MISHA Surgery

This MISHA surgery was hard. I wouldn’t recommend any type of knee surgery. When this comes out, I’m done. No knee replacement for me. Hopefully, I can live through the pain. But the pain of surgery may be even worse.

Tackling the Hills with My Training Partner

Anyway, today I did my second brick of the week. I did it with my training partner, Ray. He’s a beast. I totally can’t keep up with him, yet I am grateful that he wants to stick around with me.

We rode the hills of SUNY Old Westbury. And let me tell you, that place is a horror show! There are so many hills; it’s scary going downhill because you’re riding almost 30 mph, and going uphill is incredibly tough, especially at a mere 4 mph. You definitely get your cardio there.

After two full loops, I was done. I couldn’t do it anymore. It’s been a while since I was there, but my mind and body said NO MORE! I met Ray back at the car and we went for a run.

Finding My Running Rhythm Again

He’s the same with the run, miles ahead of me. We started at a 1-minute run/30-second walk pace for the first mile. Then, I did a 30-second run/15-second walk (my go-to).

I ran a little more than 2 miles in 30 minutes with an average pace of 13:13, so I’m trending faster. I felt so good when I finished, I wanted to do the happy dance.

That Runner’s High I’ve Been Missing

That’s when Queen’s “Another One Bites the Dust” came on my Shokz OneDot Open Air Earbuds. I just felt like dancing. I had that runner’s high that I missed so dearly when I was out of commission. It felt so amazing.

I rode all the way back to my house with a big smile on my face.
