On Signing Up For Runs and Not Running…

I’m embarrassed to say that I have signed up for numerous races and never ran them.

It’s not that I don’t want to run these races, it’s just that something comes up and stops me from doing them.

The first time Marti DiPaola, my running partner, and I signed up for the Disney Half Marathon. This was nearly two years ago, we both got sick when we arrived in Orlando. We had a situation with the Disney hotel and the shuttles.  Disney was apologetic and waived the fee for our next race but then we weren’t able to do that one either due to injuries.  So we flew down to Orlando and didn’t even do the race.  It was heartbreaking for both of us.

Then I signed up for the Hampton Half Marathon and ended up getting injured and was unable to run the race.

Just recently, Marti and I signed up for a color race and a glow race and between injuries and family illnesses, we had to forfeit our entry.

It’s upsetting on two levels — one we end up spending money on these random races to find that we can’t get our money back and two, we were anticipating running and we weren’t able to do them!

Sometimes, I wonder if it’s better to sign up at the last minute.  This way, you are almost guaranteed that you will participate, unless the race is closed.

It feels like you can’t plan because you never know what’s going to happen.

Tell me if you ever had this situation happen and how you deal or dealt with it.  Thanks in advance for sharing on my blog!
